Cancer-Causing Habits

What are you doing to cause cancer?

Doesn't it seem like everything these days causes cancer? Sun exposure, x-rays, radiation, power lines, pesticides, chemicals in your food and water, stress, and hormone therapies. And those are just a few of the possible causes of the dreaded disease. It seems getting harder and harder to avoid all the things that increase your risk, and some simply give up.

Instead of throwing up your hands in defeat, take heart knowing there are ways to reduce your risk of a cancer diagnosis. Many people unknowingly engage in daily habits that have the potential of causing cancer. Do any of these habits describe you? If so, you may want to consider some lifestyle changes before it's too late.

Cancer Habit 1: Inactivity

You know exercise is good for your heart, stress level, and waistline, but did you know it also helps protect you from cancer? Folks who sit around all day are more likely to deal with inflammation, which increases your risk for cancer. The less exercise you get, the higher your risk for breast, colorectal, endometrial, and lung cancer.

You're supposed to get 30 to 60 minutes a day of moderate physical activity, but the bad news is those few minutes of huffing and puffing won't protect you from cancer if you're sedentary the rest of the day. Make it your goal to lead an active lifestyle all day every day.

Cancer Habit 2: Smoking

If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: smoking causes cancer and practically every other disease and illness under the sun. The more cigarettes and the longer you smoke, the greater your risk. Cigarette smoke is loaded with carcinogens that damage the cells in your lungs, esophagus, mouth, throat, bladder, liver, stomach, colon, and pancreas to name a few. Find help to stop smoking and your cancer risk will slowly go down. Before you know it, your lungs will look like they did the day before your first cigarette.

Cancer Habit 3: Working Nights

Maybe it was the only job you could get or perhaps the schedule works better for your family situation, but the night shift may increase a woman's risk for breast cancer. One study found women who worked nights for 30 years or more had nearly double the chances of developing the disease. A suppression of melatonin, sleep disturbances, or a lack of vitamin D may be to blame. Get your work schedule on the day shift and you may take a pay cut, but the subsequent boost in life expectancy is worth it.

Cancer Habit 4: Drinking Alcohol

One day you hear drinking alcohol in moderation has health benefits, the next you hear it gives you cancer. It's the resveratrol in red wine that may help protect you from cancer, but other alcoholic beverages increase your risk for the disease. As alcohol metabolizes in the body, it forms a carcinogen called acetaldehyde. Alcohol is also high in calories, which contribute to obesity, a condition that puts you at risk for a host of various cancers.

The more you drink, the higher your risk for cancer of the throat, esophagus, liver, breast, and colon. Men should consume no more than two drinks a day and women should keep to just one.

Cancer Habit 5: Choosing Sugary Beverages

Drinking juice for breakfast, lemonade for lunch, sports drink after your workout, and soda for dinner may seem like a harmless habit, but it's one that's quietly and negatively affecting your health. Sugar-filled beverages cause a spike in blood sugar and a surge in insulin production. A constant flood of insulin raises your risk of endometrial cancer and leads to obesity, another well-known risk factor for cancer.

Make sweet beverages a treat to be enjoyed every once in a while, not every day, and definitely not every meal. When you do drink them, cut them with water until your taste buds adjust. Eventually, you’ll be able to kiss that soda goodbye for good!
