Homebound Fitness

Working out at home is gaining popularity. Have you jumped on the bandwagon? Should you?

The arrival of a global pandemic changed a lot. For many, it changed how they get their exercise. For months, gyms were closed or you played it safe by avoiding crowds. Depending on where you live, you may have been stuck at home, unable to go outside to exercise. While working out at home has always been an option, it isn’t your first choice. But you were forced to do it for a while, so you made the most of it. Since your trainer offers online services, it wasn’t too bad.

What about those who don’t have the services of a personal trainer? How do they work out from home? If you’re wondering what’s currently trending in the home fitness industry, wonder no more!

A Home Gym

You pay a monthly membership fee at the gym. That fee gives you ready access to your trainer, who is an exercise expert and a killer coach. But some opt for workout equipment to use at home. Sales of simple exercise equipment such as exercise balls, dumbbell sets, elastic bands, Yoga mats, Yoga blocks, and weight benches soared during the pandemic as people stayed home to exercise.

Of course, soon after purchase, much exercise equipment is used to hang clothes on, but it’s the thought that counts, right? For those without room for a gym, rearranging some furniture or clearing out a section of the garage makes it possible to at least do some bodyweight exercises.

High-End Equipment

Spin classes may have been cancelled for the pandemic, but it’s still possible to get an effective workout on a stationary bike in your home. The Peloton fitness company experienced an explosion in their sales in 2020, seeing an increase of 232 percent from the previous year. Peloton sells stationary bikes that are connected to the Internet for a virtual workout experience. They come with built-in speakers and a touchscreen that makes thousands of interactive classes available in your home. While they are pricey upfront, they come with excellent reviews.

Besides a stationary bike, other high-end exercise equipment that many people purchase for their home gym include a treadmill, row machine, elliptical machine, the Mirror, Bowflex Xtreme, or Tonal.


When the gym is closed or you don’t have room in your house for a home gym, an exercise app may be all you need. An added benefit: many exercise apps come free of charge. Don’t care to stare at your phone any more than you have to? Hunt workout videos on YouTube to be guided through whatever variety of exercise you want to try. Just be careful. Anyone with a smartphone can make a YouTube channel. So use caution when choosing a video to work out with. Other apps help you track your exercise progress, stay motivated, and feel part of a community.


Workout watches, bracelets, rings, or clip-ons are all part of the at-home fitness craze. These allow you to monitor your heart rate, record your sleep quality, and track your fitness progress. A connected app can record your time, pace, distance, swim lap time, calories burned, cycling cadence, and recovery data. Added bonus: these are helpful when you get back to the gym also!

Virtual Fitness

Like other businesses, the fitness world learned to adapt to the social distancing restrictions of the past year. Virtual fitness gained popularity as people were stuck at home. Your personal trainer even got in on it. This meant no more traffic jams on the way to the gym or adjusting your busy schedule around a workout class. With hundreds of exercise classes to choose from, fitness challenges, competitions, workout games, and evaluations available at the click of a button, there’s something for every fitness level. Of course, it also lacked face-to-face interaction, but for the motivated person, online training is a great opportunity to chase after fitness goals.
