Small Weight Loss = Big Benefits

Lose a few pounds for big health rewards.

Maybe you need to lose 10, 20, or 50 pounds or more and your health is hurting because of it. Carrying around extra weight takes a toll on health. After all, obesity puts you at risk for type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, certain cancers, fatty liver disease, stroke, heart disease, and kidney disease to name a few. Your doctor has been encouraging you to lose weight, and you know that if you did it, your health would improve. What you don’t know is that losing just a few pounds could make a big difference in your health.

Health experts report that losing just five percent of your total body weight is enough to radically improve your health. For a 200-pound person, that’s only 10 pounds. And you can lose that much weight with ease! Here’s what could happen to your health if you put in the effort to make it happen.

Relieve Joint Pain

Walking up and down stairs, standing for long periods, or even walking to the mailbox can be painful when doing it with excessive weight. Carrying around extra pounds puts strain and pressure on your joints, wears them out faster, and increases your risk of osteoarthritis. Being just 10 pounds overweight adds an estimated 40 pounds of pressure on your lower body joints. Losing that 10 pounds will bring pain relief and lower your chances of osteoarthritis by 50 percent!

Lower Cholesterol

High cholesterol leads to a buildup of plaque in your arteries that puts you at risk for heart attack and stroke. A little weight loss goes a long way in increasing your HDL, the good cholesterol. What makes it so good? It removes the bad LDL cholesterol from your blood that threatens your good health.

Decrease Inflammation

Fat cells, especially those around your abdomen, produce chemicals that increase inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is associated with heart disease, arthritis, kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Cut down your waistline and you’ll go a long way toward helping your body reduce its inflammation.

Manage Diabetes

Maintaining optimal blood sugar levels isn’t easy when on insulin medications. However, if you lose some weight, you’ll be able to keep healthy levels much easier. In fact, you’ll find you won’t won’t need as much medication to keep healthy levels. You may even stop needing insulin medication at all. Prefer to avoid diabetes in the first place? Losing weight now is one of the best ways to keep diabetes at bay tomorrow and every day after.

Prevent Cancer

When you’re overweight, your body produces fewer hormones linked to estrogen, insulin, and androgens. Why does this matter? Because estrogen, insulin, and androgens are all linked to cancer. Losing a few pounds may not be a magic pill that wards off cancer, but it certainly reduces your risk.

Sleep Better

While it can affect anyone, sleep apnea is most commonly found in overweight people. A frustrating condition that causes the sufferer to stop breathing repeatedly throughout the night, sleep apnea can be fatal if left untreated.

Reduce your weight and you can greatly reduce your risk for this frustrating and dangerous condition. You’ll sleep better and safer and be prepared for whatever the day brings your way!
