How to figure out if a life coach is right for you

Starting a new business venture, trying to eat healthy, and finding balance in your busy life aren’t easy endeavors. Sometimes you need more than a best friend or therapist to motivate you toward success, whether it’s in the workplace, in relationships, or in your own mind. You know what you want your life to look like, but you just can’t seem to get there by yourself. This is where a life coach comes in.

What exactly does a life coach do and could you benefit from hiring one? Keep reading to find out.

Life Coached Defined

A life coach is different from a counselor, friend, mentor, or accountability partner. Life coaches are trained professionals with expertise in various areas of business, health, or relationships. They come alongside you to help provide focus, direction, and motivation to reach your personal or business goals. Unlike therapists or counselors, life coaches don’t delve into the past or give advice about the future, but they work with you toward self-discovery. Sometimes they work one-on-one, and other times they work with groups.

By listening, asking questions, challenging, and observing, a life coach works with you to define your goal and then helps you create a plan that includes detailed steps toward reaching whatever goal you have in mind. They help keep you accountable along the journey so you learn how to overcome obstacles and make wise choices as you work toward your goal. In short, a life coach helps you reach your full potential.

Types of Life Coaches

Just like there are different types of doctors, counselors, or personal trainers, there are a variety of life coaches. Besides a general life coach, there are those who specialize in life balance, small business, executive business, health, relationships, and personal finance.

People may seek out a life coach to help them form better relationships, improve self-confidence, manage anger or stress, cope with grief, find a career, increase productivity, become more organized, reach business or health goals, get out of debt, or even learn how to be a better parent. When it comes down to it, it’s possible that everyone could benefit in some way from a life coach.

Hiring a Coach

Finding the right life coach for you may take some shopping around. After finding a coach who specializes in the area you’re looking for, make sure he or she is certified by an accredited school. Anyone can claim to be a life coach, but a professional coach has been trained and certified. Look for a coach who willingly provides references and testimonials. It’s also important to find someone you can get along with, you can trust, and you feel comfortable talking to about just about anything. Many coaches offer a free initial session to help you with the decision-making process, so take advantage of this.

How It Works

After hiring a life coach, you’ll typically have three to four sessions a month that generally last 30 minutes to an hour. These sessions usually take place over the phone. Phone conversations mean you can work with a coach who lives anywhere in the world. They also save travel time and money.

Some people may prefer to meet with their client or coach face-to-face. Most business and group coaching is done in person.

Thanks to technology, many life coaching sessions take place via videoconference on the Internet. This offers the convenience of a telephone call with the more personal touch of live video.

Most coaches require a minimum commitment of one month, while many prefer at least three to six months. After that, you can quit whenever you want. But before you do, make sure you have met your goals or have the tools at your disposal to do so.
